Onboarding is where brokerages lose the clients they paid to acquire. A trader who signs up today and cannot trade for three days usually funds somewhere else. These are the five changes we see make the biggest difference, all of them things RedCherry's onboarding and KYC module was built to do.

1. Verify identity inside the sign-up flow, not after it

The slowest onboarding processes ask for documents by email after registration. The fastest run identity, face and address checks as steps of the sign-up itself, through a provider such as Sumsub, Shufti Pro or Didit. The client uploads a passport, takes a selfie and continues; the provider returns a result in minutes, and only flagged cases wait for a person. Compliance reviews exceptions instead of every application.

2. Tie permissions to verification levels

Not every action needs full verification. Let a client who has confirmed email and phone explore the portal and open a demo account; let a client who has passed ID verification deposit; hold withdrawals until the address check is done. Verification levels with permissions per level keep the regulator happy and the client moving. RedCherry configures levels, requirements and permissions per brokerage, so the rules match your licence.

3. Localize by country

A client in one region needs different documents, payment methods and language than a client in another. Country-based onboarding shows each client the steps their region needs and nothing else. It also lets you switch on a local payment method for one market without touching the rest.

4. Create the trading account automatically

Once a client reaches the level you require, the MT4 or MT5 account should exist before they ask for it. RedCherry's trading platform integration creates the account on your server with the group and leverage you configured, and the client sees the login in the portal. No ticket, no manager terminal.

5. Tell the client what happens next

Most support tickets during onboarding are status questions: is my document approved, when can I trade. Automatic emails and portal notifications at each step, plus a clear 'next step' on the dashboard, remove most of them. Clients who know what to do next finish; clients who wonder leave.

Common onboarding mistakes

  • Asking for every document on the first screen, before the client has any reason to trust the brokerage
  • Sending clients to a different site or email thread to upload documents, where drop-off cannot be measured
  • One global flow for every country, so clients see documents and payment methods that do not apply to them
  • A manual review step for every application, which turns compliance into a queue that grows on weekends
  • No visible status, so clients open tickets to ask what is happening and support answers the same question all day

An onboarding flow that converts

A sequence that works for most brokerages starts with a two-field sign-up, email and phone confirmation with one-time codes, and a demo account the client can open straight away. Identity verification comes next, inside the portal, and unlocks deposits. The first deposit goes through a gateway the client recognises for their country, with the fee shown before they pay, and a live MT5 account is created automatically when it lands. Address verification runs in the background and unlocks withdrawals. At every step the dashboard shows the next action and an email confirms the last one.

The whole flow is configured in RedCherry per country, with the client area showing status and the back office showing the queue, so both sides see the same picture.

Onboarding clients who arrive through an IB

Clients referred by an introducing broker arrive with the partner already attached: the referral link carries the IB and the campaign into the sign-up, so the client sits on the IB's record from the first click. That helps onboarding in two ways. The IB sees in the partner area whether their client has verified and funded, and can nudge them personally, which is often faster than any email from the brokerage. And the brokerage applies the same country rules and verification levels to referred clients as to everyone else, so a partner never needs a separate, looser flow to bring clients in.

Onboarding on a phone

Many sign-ups start on a phone, so the flow has to work with a thumb: short forms, camera capture for documents and the option to stop and finish later. The RedCherry mobile app runs the same onboarding as the web client area, and a client who starts on one can finish on the other, because both read and write the same client record. Notifications tell the client when a document is approved or needs replacing, so they come back to the app instead of waiting for an email they may never open.

What fast means for your brokerage

There is no universal benchmark; a brokerage under a strict licence will always ask for more than one in a lighter regime. What matters is that you set targets and measure against them. A useful set is the time from sign-up to verified identity, the time from verified identity to first deposit, and the share of applications that reach a person rather than being decided automatically. Write the targets down per country, review them monthly and change one step at a time, so you can see which change moved the number.

Ten questions to audit your current flow

  • How many fields does the first screen ask for?
  • Are email and phone confirmed with one-time codes, or with links that land in spam?
  • Does identity verification happen inside the portal, or by email?
  • Which actions does each verification level unlock?
  • Are documents and payment methods different per country?
  • Is the trading account created automatically when the client qualifies?
  • Does the client see the fee before they deposit?
  • Does every step send a confirmation and show the next one?
  • How long does a flagged application wait for a decision?
  • Can you see where applications stall, by step and by country?

If more than three of those answers are no, or nobody knows, the flow is costing you clients. Each question maps to a setting in RedCherry's onboarding module or a report in the dashboard.

Country rules in practice

Take two regions a brokerage might serve. In the first, clients are used to card payments, licences expect identity and address checks before any deposit, and the portal runs in English. In the second, clients fund by local bank transfer or an e-wallet, a national identity card is the usual document, and the portal should open in the local language. With one global flow, both groups see a mix of documents and payment methods that do not apply to them, and both drop off.

With country-based onboarding, each region gets its own sign-up form, document list, verification levels, payment methods and language, configured once in the back office. A client sees only what applies to them, compliance enforces the rules their licence requires per country, and opening a third region means adding a configuration rather than rebuilding the flow.

Measuring it

The number to watch is time from sign-up to first deposit, and where applications stall in between. RedCherry's reporting shows conversion by step, so you can see whether the bottleneck is document upload, provider review or the first deposit, and fix that step rather than guessing.
